Pennridge Little League 14U wins state championship


The Pennridge Little League 14U travel team edged Montoursville 4-3 to claim the 2011 Junior League Baseball Pennsylvania State Tournament championship on Aug. 1 in Cranberry. The state title is first in the 58 years of the Pennridge Little League.

Pennridge went 3-0 in during pool play, defeating Marvine/Weston Park 13-6, Pen-Mar 18-1 and Levittown Continental  4-2. In the semifinals, Pennridge topped Dunbar 4-1.

In winning the District 20 tournament, Pennridge outscored opponents 42-0 in four games. Then at the Section 6 tournament, the team posted another 42 runs while allowing just three in three contests.

Pennridge Little League Opening Day


Pennridge Little League's Opening Day festivities on April 30 kicked off with a parade of the current teams through of Perkasie and ended at the Pennridge Little League fields,  where the league’s founders and Hall of Fame inductees (listed below) were honored:

  • Sam Pierce, founder, represented by his daughter, Carol Pierce.
  • James Hackett, co-founder and first treasurer, represented by daughters Joanne Raphael and Jill Hackett.
  • Russ Hollenbach, first vice president, represented by Mayor and Mrs. John Hollenbach and grandchildren Russ and Becky Hollenbach.
  • Jim Groff, first president, represented by son, Jim Groff.
  • Paul “Reds” Snyder, first secretary, represented by son, Tim Snyder.
  • Merrill Schrack, first umpire-in-chief, represented by son, James Schrack.
  • Earl Gehman, board member, represented by daughter, Karen Lyons.
  • Buzz Cressman, board member, represented by his wife, Carlyn Cressman, son, Tim Cressman and daughter, Susan Cressman.
  • Ernie Moyer (only living original member), first manager of the Jaycees.
  • Abe Mann, assistant manager of Jaycees, represented by sons Jim and Dave Mann and daughter-in-law, Grace Mann.
  • Francis “Gus” Schmidt, first manager of Renner Bros., represented by daughter, Jennifer Spear Schmidt.
  • Les Gilbert, assistant manager of Renner Bros. - represented by sons Dan and George Gilbert
  • Norm Steinly, first manager of Hartman Welders - represented by son, Jack Steinly
  • Dave Oltman, first manager of Rotary - represented by daughter, Debra Oltman
