Souderton Blaze U13 takes first at JAGS 30th Anniversary Tournament

The Souderton Blaze U13 girls travel soccer team took first place in U13 Green Division at the JAGS (Jersey Area Girls Soccer) 30th Anniversary Tournament June 19-20. The Blaze allowed just one goal in advancing out of its Saturday bracket. In the final, Souderton topped New Jersey's East Windsor Pal Xtreme 2-1, as the winner coming from Bailey Kratz's header off a Emilie Kupsov cross early in overtime.

Orioles wins TYA Minors championship

The Orioles defeated the Rockies 6-2 to win the TYA Minors Baseball championship on June 16.

Olympians win DRVSA U10 Thunder title

The Olympians defeated the Twisters 5-1 to win the Deep Run Valley Sports Association Lady Lightning Softball U10 Thunder championship. Alexa DeFulgentis had a strong pitching performance, while Olivia Embert had a clutch single and an RBI. DeFulgentis, Monica Embert, Meghan Peters, Madison Stolarski, Saloni Pandya and Alexis Haring all had multiple hits.

Icebreakers win DRVSA Bolts 12U championship

The Icebreakers, sponsored by Modell's Sporting Goods and coached by Brian Lafty, bested the team sponsored by Quakertown National Bank on June 12 to win the Deep Run Valley Sports Association Lady Lightning Softball 12U Bolts title.

16U Doylestown Dragons first at USSSA June Hustle


The 16U Doylestown Dragons travel softball team took first place at the USSSA June Hustle 16U Open Tournament in Quakertown May 22-23.

The Dragons went 2-1 in pool play to earn the third seed in elimination play. On Sunday, Doylestown did not allow a run en route to capturing the championship. The Dragons topped the Montgomery Twisters 13-0, downed the Tri-County Thunder 6-0 in a rematch from the previous day and bested the Delco Force 6-0 in the tournament final.

The Dragons will be playing in the ASA 16U B Eastern Nationals in Dayton, Ohio in August.

Doylestown pitcher Amanda Koenig went 3-0 with three shutouts, including a one-hitter. She allowed 10 hits and struck out 11. Kiersten Ponak posted a 1-1 record in the circle, her victory coming in the semi against Tri-County. Kate Shirley went 1-0 as she threw a four-hitter.

Offensively for the Dragons, Hallie Bilker has eight hits, all singles, and an RBI, while Amanda Cicchino also finished with eight hits, including two doubles, a triple and three RBIs.

Ashley Miller had three singles, two doubles and a triple, along with driving in four runs. Kerry Schultz had three singles, a triple and five RBIs, with Lyndsay Dotzman collected four RBIs as she hit three singles a double. Alli DiNatale and Julia Schoenewald each had four hits, while Shannon Moonan, Michelle Paulosky, Kiersten Ponak, Kate Shirey, Emma Vibber combined for seven hits.

The North Penn Eclipse 18U fastpitch softball team, coached by Lenny Diehl, took first place at the USSSA “May Madness” tournament held at Veterans Park in Quakertown May 15-16. Souderton Stingers take first at Philadelphia Classic Soccer Tournament


The Souderton Stingers U9  girls travel soccer team, in its first season as a team, took first place at the Philadelphia Classic Soccer Tournament June 12-13. The Stingers, who will play in ICSL Division 2 this fall, posted wins of 5-0 and 7-0 on Saturday, then claimed a 3-2 victory on Sunday.

Mustangs win Harleysville Girls 10U Softball League


The Mustangs, sponsored by R&R Wood Products, won the Harleysville Girls 10U Softball League championship. Seeded fourth in the playoffs, the Mustangs proceeded to defeated the No. 5 Jaguars 9-3, the No. 1 Thunderbirds 15-8 and finally the No. 2 Firebirds 10-7 in the championship. In each of their playoff contests, the Mustangs were able to turn a double play.

Ukranian Nationals Krush takes first at Ukranian Nationals Invitational Tournament

The Ukrainian Nationals Krush soccer team, coached by Gary Stephenson, finished as undefeated champions in the Girls U-15 Division at the Ninth Annual Ukrainian Nationals Invitational Tournament held in Horsham May 28-30.
The Krush defense, led by Sam O’Donnell and goalie Courtney Sullivan, consistently shut down their opponents. In the final, Mary Kate Bateman collected a hat trick as the Krush topped Nether Providence AA NPAA '94 Crush 3-0. The Krush also defeated Souderton Area SA Cyclones (5-1), FC York 94 Elite (1-0) and Vereinigung Erzgebirge SC Cheetahs (2-0) en route to the final.

Harleysville FC U11 takes first at Buckingham March into Cups

The new Harleysville FC (HFC) U11 boys soccer team won its first tournament entered under coach Tom Quintois and staff, going undefeated in its division at the Buckingham March into Cups tournament June 5.

Harleysville Thunderbirds 14U wins ASA Spring Thunder Softball Tournament

The Harleysville Thunderbirds 14U went 6- 1 to capture the ASA Spring Thunder Softball Tournament championship May 22-23.
The Thunderbirds were dominant in pool play, scoring 20 runs in two games as they claimed the No. 1 seed entering the elimination round. Heather Milligan threw a shutout, while Erelle Sowers allowed just a run in the second contest. Sowers, Amanda Loar, Emily Allen and Morgan Yoder each had two-hit games.
The T-Birds earned a 8-3 victory in a rainy elimination-round opener. Kacy Carroll retired 11 consecutive batters in the middle innings. In the third, Yoder drove in a run with a double, followed with singles from Milligan, Sowers and Paige Shelly as Harleysville went up 5-1. The Thunderbirds added another run in the fourth off bunts singles by Loar and Jenna Gibbons.
Against Deep Run, Alyssa Kratz retired 12 of the first 13 batters she face, allowing only a bunt single in the second as the T-Birds won 3-1. Harleysville scored twice in the third on base hits by Shelly and Milligan sandwiching a Yoder double. Harleysville then bested North Penn 4-0 in the winner's bracket final. The Thunderbirds broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a two-run triple by Sowers and RBI singles from Carroll and Bridget Casey. Kratz struck out seven batters and retired nine straight batters leading into the sixth.
Facing North Penn again in the finals, Harleysville dropped the first game, but rebounded to win the tournament with a 5-1 victory.
In the first contest, North Penn scored three in the top of the first, Alex Cominitski doubled to left center and went to third on a Loar bunt. Milligan came in to pitch in the third, allowing two runners to reach base. Down 4-2 in the seventh, Carroll singled, with Loar following with a RBI base hit. An Allen single loaded the bases, but the T-Birds could not complete the comeback.
Harleysville opened the second game with North Penn by scoring twice in the first off two-out singles from Allen, Yoder and Milligan. Another T-Birds' run came home in the third after a Comonitski single, Loar sacrifice bunt and a passed ball. Milligan allowed a run in four innings in the circle. Kratz pitched in relief, retiring nine of the 10 batters she faced and struck out four. In the sixth Allen and Yoder singled. Milligan tallied her third RBI on a ground out. Sowers added an RBI single.

PA Rush Swoosh U11 takes second at Buckingham March into Cups

Playing in its first tournament, the recently-formed PA Rush Swoosh U11 girls soccer team took second place at the Buckingham March into Cups Tournament after playing sister squad, first-place finisher PA Rush Nike, to a tie in its final match. Each team cheered the other as they received their medals.

Allison Smith wins vault, bars at Pennsylvania USAG Level 6 State Meet

Allison Smith of Telford, a Level 6 gymnast at Spirit Gymnasts competed at the 2010 Pennsylvania USA Gymnastics Level 6 State Meet in Washington May 8-9.
Smith was the state champ on the vault (9.475) and bars (9.30), winning the vault at the third-straight level (four, five and six). She came in second all-around (36.875) and beam (9.075) and was sixth in the floor exercise (9.025). Smith will continue at Spirit, and will start training as a Level 7 gymnast.

TYA U18 first, 14U second at VIGS Midseason Tournament

TYA's U18 and 14U softball squads earned first and second place finishes, respectively at the VIGS Mid-Season Tournament May 14-16 at Schweiker Park in Lansdale.

The U18 squad dropped its two seeding games May 15, but used strong pitching and outstanding defense May 16 to win three games and claim the championship. The scored twice in the bottom of the final inning to beat Deep Run 5-4 in the play-in game, then jumped out early on top seed North Penn and won 5-3. Facing RASA in the final, TYA took an 8-1 lead en route to a 9-6 victory.

The TYA 14U team won both pool games May 15, advancing to elimination round as the second seed. , Facing one of the toughest pitches in the region on May 16, TYA erased a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh to beat Deep Run in walk-off fashion. TYA downed North Penn 9-6 in the semifinals, creating a matchup with top-seed Montgomery in the final. There, TYA pulled to within 5-4 after scoring four times in the third, but Montgomery added a few more runs to take the victory.

15th Annual Doubles Tennis Tournament

The 15th Annual Doubles Tennis Tournament was held at North Penn High School May 26-27. The two-day tournament started with a round robin for seeding with twenty teams participating.
The championship round was played on the second day of the tournament. Everyone was in a competitive mood, and the spectators watched with interest.
An awards ceremony was held at the end of the tournament. Winners Lauren Simeone and Tassos Sapalidis signed the tennis ball for winners, a tournament tradition since 1995.

Championship Winners
First place: Lauren Simeone and Tasso Sapalidis (Arcola Intermediate  School).
Second place: Phil Nash and Alex Keating.
Third place: Chris Mullen (Penndale Middle School) and Kevin DeRosa (Souderton High School).
Fourth Place: Vy Nguyen and Erik Barnes.

Consolation Winners

Second place: Sierra Bennett and Kevin Janson
