The North Penn Squires flag team traveled to play the Plymouth Whitemarsh Spartans on Sept. 24. The captains for the week were Cole Ostroff, Luke Cody and Levar Talley as PW won 13-12.
The Spartans received the ball and after flag pulls by Owen Johnston, Zachary Smith and Ben Freer, PW punched it in the end zone with a 5-yard run.
The Squires offensive line, including Joseph Bogle, Quinton Laughlin and center James Mangine, kept the Spartans defensive line in check and on North Penn’s first possession quarterback Justin Egner broke out to score the Squires’ first touchdown to tie the game at 6-6.
The Squires defense held the Spartans off the board for the remainder of the first half, while North Penn scored with no time on the clock to lead 12-6 at halftime when receiver Graham Palumbo’s block on the right-side corner released Egner, who went left and reversed direction across the field for another touchdown
The second half was a defensive battle, with Deaglan Budd, Patrick McGee, James Bones, Kevin Pico and Nick D’Angelo making plays to keep the Spartans out of the end zone. With 2:40 left in the half, the Spartans scored a touchdown to go ahead 13-12.
The Squires received the ball back with less than two minutes remaining and after runs by Freer and Egner the clock ran out with PW holding on to the one-point win.
North Penn travels to Norristown to play the Bandits in Week 3.
▪ The North Penn Squires flag team began the regular season at home against the Conshohocken Bears on Sept. 17. The Squires’ Week 1 captains were Norm Gee, Graham Palumbo, Jaden Stahl and Kevin Pico as North Penn opened with a 26-20 victory.
The Squires defense took the field first, defending the east goal with stops from Ben Freer, Zack Smith, Owen Johnston and Levar Talley. The Bears handed the ball over to the Squires in the second series.
The Squires offense took the field and Jaden Stahl broke a long run up the middle, putting the Squires on the 20-yard line. The next play, behind the blocking of Roman Patrone, Quinton Laughlin, and James Mangine, Joe Bogle took the ball around the right end and scampered in for six points. Norm Gee evaded Conshohocken defenders to add the extra point with a run around the left end.
The Bears offense came back on the field and after stops by Patrick McGee and Nick D’Angelo, Conshohocken’s running back broke a long run for a touchdown.
The Squires offense took the field again and Ben Freer scored on a 50-yard touchdown run to put the Squires up again. Another Conshohocken touchdown made it 13-13 at halftime.
After the Squires took the second half kickoff, Justin Egner faked the hand off to Jaden Stahl and took off for a 40-yard touchdown. On the Bears ensuing offensive drive they added another touchdown and for the first time this season the Squires trailed.
North Penn received the ball and Ben Freer add another touchdown behind the blocking of Cole Ostroff and Jacob Schumacher. The Bears would have one more chance on offense, only to be denied by the Squires linebacking crew that includes Deaglan Budd, Luke Cody and Nick D’Angelo.
▪ The regular season for the NP Squires started with the annual kickoff classic at the end of summer against the Harleysville Eagles. The Squires claimed the cup and won the series. The flag, 55-pound and 75-pound teams won their games with the only win for Harleysville coming at the 65-pound team.
55 lb. Squires
It was a very wet day on the field, but the 55-pound North Penn Squires maintain their footing to scored four rushing touchdowns and allow no points or first downs to Warminster.
On offense, quarterback Mike Benedict pitched the ball successfully all day to Lucas Francis, who scored three touchdowns in the first half. All of the touchdowns runs where lead by the outstanding blocks of Alex Smith, Jake Dolan and Peyton Brown.
Early in the second half, Guss Ross had a 60-yard run, the scored on a 1-yard run the next play.
Defensively, the Squires showed their style of the Wide-9 defense, with a a ton of tackles lead by Ryan Zeltt , Luke Stakelbeck, Zach Kline and Ryan Pico.
On a kickoff, Luke Smeltzer made a touchdown-saving tackle and the score remained 27-0 North Penn as the Squires earned a strong victory over Warminster.
The 55lb. team started the season with a 13-0 loss to Cecil B Moore and are now 1-1 in the young season.
65 lb. Squires
A very tough start to the season with kids being overweight and the QB suffering a concussion did not deter the Squires. Despite an 0-3 start, two games against both Cecil B Moore and Warminster were one-score games until the very end.
Sam Behr and Evin Sullivan have led the offense at the quarterback position and smart-decision making. Sullivan had the most yardage in the first game. Davidson Heinz had scored the team’s only touchdown and Aaron Oscar and Evan Hannings have been the playmakers on the offense.
Line has been effective and getting better each game. Moving the pile and playing great are kids like Jake Federer and Mike Lennon.
Top hitters like Kaleb Paulin, Nolan Roberts and Nolan Verespy have made plays and rung bells on both sides of the ball.
